# Moderating across instances

> Defederate instances, suspend remote accounts and handle emergencies.

Each instance moderates its own people, and what you remove from your instance is removed everywhere. You can also suspend accounts from other instances on yours.

## Defederating

From the admin panel's **Federation** page you can defederate any instance. Its accounts and posts disappear from yours, and nothing more comes from it until you federate again. You can also delete everything you got from it.

## Superadmins

A few people listed in `src/superadmins.ts` can act on every instance in an emergency, including defederating a bad instance everywhere at once.

* Only a superadmin can lift an emergency block. Lifting it keeps any block your own admins had made.
* A superadmin's own instance can't be blocked this way. The list's maintainers stop it by marking it `blocked` in `instances.json`, which also ends its superadmins' access.
* Turning federation off (`FEDERATION=off`) stops superadmins from signing in to your instance.
