# Introduction

> Xitter is a self-hosted backend for the X (Twitter) web client.

Xitter hosts a pinned build of the official X web client from your own domain and answers its API from PostgreSQL. The real x.com interface runs against your own instance.

The client itself is not part of the Xitter repository. Each instance downloads its own copy during setup, and the copy stays on that machine.

## License

Xitter is licensed under [AGPL-3.0](https://github.com/Xittered/xitter/blob/main/LICENSE). If you run a modified instance for other people, you must offer them its source. The signed-out home page links to it (`SOURCE_URL`, or Settings in the admin panel).
